Library and downloads
The library takes the sidebar’s place and gathers what is not a tab: pictures and videos from your Downloads and Desktop, your downloads, all spaces, and the tabs that went to the archive. It is Arc’s library. The library button at the bottom left of the sidebar is also where downloads land.
Opening the library
Section titled “Opening the library”- ⌥⌘B or ⇧⌘L (Ansicht › Bibliothek). The same keys close it again.
- In the first space, swipe right over the sidebar, with two fingers on the trackpad or one on a Magic Mouse. Swiping back to the left closes it.
- Right-click the library button and choose Bibliothek öffnen, or Downloads in der Bibliothek to go straight to the downloads. ⇧⌘J (Verlauf › Downloads) does the same.
- If you turned off the downloads stack (below), a click on the library button opens the library.
The × at the top right closes it.
On the left are the four sections: Medien, Downloads, Spaces and Archiv. The field at the top searches the section you are in: every word you type has to appear in the name, or in an archived tab’s title or address.
Medien shows the pictures and videos in your Downloads folder and on your Desktop, newest first, as small previews. A click opens one in its usual app. Drag one into another app to use it there.
Downloads
Section titled “Downloads”Downloads lists the files in your Downloads folder, newest first, with their size and when they arrived. A file counts as new when it came into the folder, so something you unpacked or moved there just now is at the top.
- Downloads still running are at the top, with a progress bar and × (Download abbrechen) to cancel them. Chrome then removes the half-finished file.
- Rest the pointer on a file for a moment to see a preview of it.
- Click a file to open it, or drag it into another app.
Spaces
Section titled “Spaces”Spaces lists every space with its profile and how many pinned and open tabs it has. A click goes to the space and closes the library. Right-click a space to edit, move or delete it. Neuer Space at the end adds one. See Spaces.
Archive
Section titled “Archive”Archiv holds the tabs under the line that were closed or archived: by ⌘W, by Aufräumen, by the tabs of a window of its own that closed, and by OpenArch after the time set under Settings › Allgemein › Tabs › Tabs unter dem Strich archivieren (12 hours unless you change it). The newest are at the top, with their address and when they went.
- A click brings a tab back into its space, where it was under the line.
- Right-click for Wiederherstellen, URL kopieren and Aus dem Archiv entfernen.
- Archiv leeren at the bottom empties it.
The archive keeps the last 500 tabs. ⇧⌘T takes the newest one out of it, and the command bar finds archived tabs too.
Right-click menu for files
Section titled “Right-click menu for files”In the media, the downloads and the downloads stack, a right click on a file offers:
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Öffnen | opens it with its app |
| In neuem Tab öffnen | opens it in OpenArch |
| Im Finder zeigen | shows it in Finder |
| In den Papierkorb | moves it to the Trash |
While a file downloads
Section titled “While a file downloads”Chrome saves every download to your Downloads folder. OpenArch shows it the way Arc did:
- The file’s icon flies from the pointer into the library button.
- A ring around the button fills up as the download goes on. If the file’s size is not known, a short arc turns around the button instead. With several downloads, the ring shows them together.
- When the file is there, the button bounces.
With the sidebar hidden, the icon flies to the bottom left corner of the window.
Chrome’s own downloads page, with every download of the profile, is under Verlauf › Alle Downloads (⌥⌘L). Chrome’s toolbar above the page shows its downloads button too.
The downloads stack
Section titled “The downloads stack”A click on the library button shows your newest downloads over the sidebar, as in Arc. The sidebar blurs away behind them, and the files rise out of the button, the newest nearest to it, as many as there is room for. Each shows a preview and how long ago it arrived. Downloads still running are at the bottom, with a progress bar and a button to cancel them.
- Click a file to open it.
- Drag a file into another app, like a file from Finder. Dropped on a folder in Finder, it moves there.
- Right-click a file for the menu above.
A click on the button again, a click beside the files or on the page, or Esc puts the stack away.
Choosing what the stack shows
Section titled “Choosing what the stack shows”Right-click the library button:
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bibliothek öffnen | the library, in the section you used last |
| Downloads in der Bibliothek | the library’s downloads |
| Downloads-Ordner im Finder | the Downloads folder in Finder |
| Klick zeigt die letzten Downloads | on: a click shows the stack; off: a click opens the library |
| Darin zeigen | which files the stack shows: Bilder, Videos und Musik, Dokumente, Archive, Apps und Installer, Andere |
The stack shows the Downloads folder, so files that got there another way show up in it too.
